Take Advantage of Your Time

Life gets crazy. Life as an athlete gets crazy times ten. We get it. How can you boost your training as an athlete when you’re already sometimes overwhelmed? Create opportunity availability…here’s how to work on that…

The weather lately in Northern Colorado has been all over the map. We’ve had big snow flakes early in the morning, followed by sunny warmth and blue skies a few hours later. That’s late winter / early spring here and we know it! When the weather provides these extra pockets of opportunity to be and train outside, are you ready for it? Does your schedule offer you the chance to jump out for a quick run or a workout in the sunshine? Here are a few tips to help make that happen.

GO BAG READY – This sounds a little cliché but it really works. Have a “training go bag” ready and with you during the day (at work, in your travels or even at home in the front hall closet). This is your basic essential gear for grabbing a quick run OR doing a short training session on the spot if your day suddenly allows.

GRAZE ALL DAY – Lunch breaks, snack breaks and everything in between – focus on grazing throughout the day vs larger meals, if possible. Let’s say you have a big lunch and then an opportunity to grab a run workout pops up just 15 minutes later. This likely won’t be a very effective or healthy run, will it? If you instead had been grazing and lightly snacking throughout the day your gut would potentially be in better shape to tackle that last minute run workout. Try grazing if possible and see how it works out.

PLAN AHEAD – This one definitely seems obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Look at the next hour, day, week and even month of your “everything schedule”. What can you restructure OR do now so it’s preset for the day/week/month ahead? Having things checked off the list allow you to be more flexible during the day if a workout opportunity pops up.
